Scott Shannon, MD, ABIHM, has been involved in holistic medicine since he joined the American Holistic Medical Association in 1978 as a founding member. Scott has been instrumental in the creation of a holistic and integrative perspective in psychiatry for two decades. He published the first adult textbook for this field in 2001 and the first child/adolescent text in 2013. Scott is a past president of the AHMA and the immediate past President of the American Board of Integrative and Holistic Medicine. He serves as the current Secretary of the new Academy of Integrative Health and Medicine and on the new American Board of Integrative Medicine. Scott also teaches as an Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of Colorado-Children’s Hospital in Denver.
In 2010 he founded the country’s largest and most comprehensive integrative mental health clinic, Wholeness Center, in Fort Collins. Scott is trying to change the paradigm of psychiatry by providing a 5-day integrative intensive as an alternative to hospitalization. Norton published his latest textbook for professionals, Mental Health for the Whole Child in 2013 and his book for parents, Parenting the Whole Child in 2014.
“Outside of health care, I love to snowboard, bike, run, golf, bodysurf and climb mountains. Each winter I spend a lot of time in Hawaii trying to convince my wife that Colorado is not all that cold. Once it is warmer, Sue and I enjoy traveling and we spend more time in airports than we should. My personal practice involves mindfulness meditation, nature and long walks (sometimes all at once).” -Scott Shannon MD
